Culottes are where it's at in the trouser game right now. But don't worry, you don't need a super-model silhouette to pull off the style. The new look culotte can be styled in so many ways this season they pretty much suit every body shape. But the key to pulling off this trouser trend is to make sure culottes fit you perfectly. If you're tall, petite, lean or curvy, this can be the style for you.
But I can't find the perfect fit?
Fit is key to a successful culotte. As much as you can balance the style out with the right top, you do need to think about proportions when it comes to getting the style right for your body. If the fit doesn't work, culottes can be unflattering and make you look shorter or wider than you actually are.
Where should culotte trousers fall?
Our clients ask the same question; how long should my culottes be? Generally speaking, culottes should fall mid-calf. You don't want to be swamped by the style.
"When we create made to measure culottes for our clients, we generally make sure that they hit a few inches above the ankle or even mid-calf and that they are flattering to the leg shape. They can still be wide leg, which looks creative and modern, but you need to keep pockets and pleating to a minimum to ensure you get the perfect drape of the fabric" advises our wonderful tailor John Ward.
And what's even better about culottes is that we cut them to fit at the perfect point on your waist so they feel comfortable and allow tops to be tucked in. That way, the culotte look is modish but also very polished. Perfect for the office - black culottes with a white silk blouse and a kitten heel or modern mule is a great corporate look that will take you from desk to dinner in style.
I'm pear shaped, will culottes suit me?
Yes, of course they will. Once you get the perfect fit, they'll look amazing. Because all of our trousers are made to fit, those who are looking to streamline the culotte can opt for an invisible side zip, no pockets and flat front. That way they can skim your waist and hips and the volume can be in the length only.
Can petite women wear culottes?
Perfectly fitting culottes look fabulous when made to fit. As much as we suggest mid-calf as the perfect length, if you are really petite consider wearing them a little shorter to get the proportions spot on. When buying off the peg, culottes can swamp those with a smaller frame which is why made to measure is such a great option.
A style for all seasons and occasions
Culottes might be on every fashionistas 'it list' for Summer 2019 but they're a style that will stand the test of time season after season. Perfect if you're looking for a tailored look during the warmer months but they equally look fabulous with a chunky knit and knee high boot as the days get shorter.
Add length to a pair of culottes with a summer sandal or killer heel, or for a laid back look opt for a white pump or loafer.
What to wear with culottes
"Strange as it may seem, think about culottes as a midi skirt when you're thinking about what to wear with them" suggests Distinctively Me founder Jill White. A pretty silk blouse will always create a classic look. A simple tee-shirt, tank top or cashmere knit will work well too. And as the days get cooler, throwing on a boucle jacket or a classic trench will really complete the look.
If you're new to this trouser style, opt for a 'natural' colour - black, navy, white and then play around with a top in a colour in your choice. But if you're feeling brave, coloured culottes can be so much fun. We love the cobalt blue colour which seems to work for most women and looks great with a colour clash. This blue pink look is a winning combination!
